Heroes at Iwo Jima
By Tanner
Have you ever heard of a place called Iwo Jima? Well you probably have, but if you haven't, it is a place in Japan that is four and a half miles long and two and a half miles wide. From February 19 to March 26, 1945 there was a battle there . It was the U.S against the Japanese.America wanted control over Iwo Jima because it had a good airbase, and the U.S had a three part plan to win the war against Japan .Having control over Iwo Jima was part of that plan. America’s plan to win the battle was sending in 70,000 soldiers against Japan’s 22,000. Out of the people on the American side, 6,900 died, and on Japan's side 21,900 people died. Our plan worked! Most of the people fighting on our side were Marines and Navy Corpsman.
During the battle, they raised the flag twice. The first flag was put up February 23, 1945. Then they took down the flag to put up a second one. They took down the flag because Colonel Johnson wanted the flag for himself. He later decided to give the flag to the 2nd Battalion 28th Marines. Rosenthal took the famous picture When the second flag went up. The soldiers who raised the second flag in the famous picture were Marines Mike Strank, Harlon Block, Franklin Sousley, Ira Hayes, and Rene Gagnon. The Navy Corpsman's name was John Bradley. Out of the six people who raised the flag, only three survived. The people who survived were Ira Hayes, John Bradley, and Rene Gagnon. I hope you are as thankful for the military veterans as much I am. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!
