The American Flag

In 1776 during the Revolutionary War, George Washington decide that the United States needed a symbol to represent our country, so he ordered a flag to be made. The order of the president was carried out by Betsy Ross in 1777, a whole year later. The design on the flag was thirteen stripes alternating red and white, and there was a blue square in the left hand corner with thirteen white stars going in a perfect circle. The stripes on the flag represented the thirteen colonies and what they stood for the most. The red stripes symbolized the blood of war and the courage of the United States. The white stripes on the flag symbolized the purity for justice and freedom that we have in the united states. The thirteen stars then, and the fifty stars now symbolize the states and colonies that we have fighting for the freedom of our country.
The flag was originally made because we didn’t have any sort of sign to represent us as a whole country fighting together for the sake of the peoples freedom. When we won the war, the flag is what symbolized that we had won and weren’t owned by the British. it is what determined that we had our own rights and some other set of rights and rules to follow.
The war we fought against the British took place in the United States. The British declared war but they later surrendered and gave us our own rights and freedom due to the fact that they were losing so much money that it wasn’t worth fighting any more.
The flag is a symbol of freedom because the night after the war ended we still stood strong and our flag was still raised high showing that the United States of America was now a free country. We had earned our freedom!
If we weren’t free today, none of us would probably be the same person on the inside or the outside. We could be owned by England, and most importantly, we wouldn’t have the American flag that held us strong through it all.
