25 Cents of Freedom
By Ethan
There are many symbols of freedom in the U.S.A. Big or small, they span across the country, showing our past and legacy in whatever form they come. But there is one thing that shows several symbols of freedom. It is a commonplace item, something that you would find on the side of a road, or in the crevices in the sidewalk. Yes, you could find this item anywhere. It is a quarter.
I know what you’re thinking. Don’t deny it. When I say that the U.S. quarter is a symbol of freedom, you stare at the monitor of your computer, or at this paper, or at me in confusion. You think, “How is that a symbol of freedom?”. The answer is simple. Just take a look at any quarter and you will find several symbols of freedom on the simple disk of metal.
The first symbol you may notice is George Washington’s head. Or maybe on one quarter it’s a picture of a state. Either way, they are symbols of freedom. The several different states on different quarters shows our unity and our diversity. George Washington symbolizes our beginning, and our hard won freedom from England. Yes, the front side of the quarter shows that we are strong, diverse, and free.
Now the back of the quarter. The jackpot, relatively speaking. The first thing you will notice is the bald eagle. the bald eagle symbolizes freedom. Living in places man has yet to infect, the bald eagle has freedom that knows no bounds. The next thing you might see is the words “E pluribus unum” inscribed on the quarter. It mean, “From many, one.”. It means that we are different and all are unique people, but we have banned together under a single flag for freedom. If you look even closer at the quarter, you are bound to see the olive branch under the eagles feet. The olive branch shows that we give peace to everyone, no matter how important that person is. Finally, the last symbol on this amazing disk of metal, are the arrows in the eagles grasp. These show our power. It means we are strong, and give into none.
The American quarter is indeed a symbol of freedom. Without the things the quarter symbolizes, we wouldn’t be where we are today; so lets celebrate in our freedom, and in all those who helped us gain it.
