Martin Luther King Junior
By Jacob
Martin Luther King Jr. fought for the freedom that we are all created equal; the same freedom that the founding fathers fought for against the British in 1776. Unlike us, he did not fight this war with weapons but with words instead. He fought for freedom for all races that lived in America, specifically for African Americans. His dream was for all races to be considered equal to white men and women. In the years of 1957 through 1968, he protested that no race was better or worse than another.
He caught the attention of many Americans while he protested his idea. By the end of King’s protests he had traveled over six million miles and spoke over 2,500. On August 28, 1963, King gave his most famous speech at the Lincoln Memorial while citizens from all across America stood silent in Washington D.C. At the end of his “I Have A Dream” speech, the people of America were truly moved.
King was thirty-five when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, he is the youngest man ever to receive this prize. He then gave his 54,123 dollars he received as prize money to the Civil Rights Movement Foundation. On the evening of April 4, 1968, he was tragically assassinated on the balcony of his hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee.
